Marin County is a national leader in seeking to understand the safety risks that e-bikes pose to young riders. After seeing an alarming 110% rise in the number of 911 responses in Marin related to all bicycle youth accidents from 2019 to 2022, Emergency Medical Services authorities began distinguishing 911 responses between e-bike accidents and conventional bicycles.

Nearly a year into the data collection, Marin Public Health authorities found the accident rate for conventional bicycles was relatively consistent across age groups, while youth aged 10-15 had a 5x higher accident rate on e-bikes compared to any adult age group. There is an urgent need for a partnered, coordinated approach to effectively address youth e-bike safety countywide.
