Analysis of Pedestrian-Vehicle Collisions in Danville (2017–2025)

In a comprehensive study of pedestrian-vehicle collisions in Danville, California, from 2017 to 2025, we analyzed data from 59 reported collisions. This study uncovers key patterns and provides valuable insights into the locations and circumstances where pedestrian-vehicle collisions are most frequent. By understanding these trends, we can identify effective strategies to reduce future collisions and enhance pedestrian safety in the community.

We also discovered something very concerning. Danville classifies e-scooter-vehicle collisions as pedestrian-vehicle collisions. On June 6, 2024 at 3:26pm a 15yr old female riding a e-scooter was hit by a vehicle and "Severely Injured" at "Diablo Rd & Matadera Way." Why is a person riding a e-scooter classified as a pedestrian on the Danville Crossroad Pedestrian Collision Summary Report (2017-2025)(PDF)

Key Findings:

  • Frequency of Collisions: On average, a pedestrian is struck and injured by a vehicle every two months...
  • Annual Collisions: From 2020 to 2025, there have been approximately 7 pedestrian-vehicle collisions per year.
  • Crosswalks as Hotspots: The majority of collisions occur in crosswalks, highlighting the need for increased vigilance and safety measures in these areas.
  • Injuries: Of the 59 collisions studied, 85% (50 collisions) resulted in pedestrian injuries.
  • Seniors: Accounted for 32% of the collisions (age 60 to 89 yrs old)
  • Children: Accounted for 34% of the collisions (age 1 to 17 yrs old)
  • Fatalities: Tragically, there have been 2 fatalities over the course of the study.
  • Yearly Breakdown: The number of collisions varied by year, with 10 incidents in 2024, 7 in 2023, 5 in 2022, 7 in 2021, and 7 in 2020.

High-Collision Locations:

Several areas in Danville have been identified as frequent hotspots for pedestrian-vehicle collisions:

  • Railroad Avenue: 8 collisions, with School St reporting 2 collisions and 1 each at Love Lane, Hartz Ave, Prospect Ave, Linda Mesa Ave, Short St and Railroad Ave
  • Hartz Avenue: 7 collisions, with Prospect Ave reporting 3 collisions and 1 each at Church St, Front St, Diablo Rd and Hartz
  • Diablo Road: 6 collisions, with 2 at Front St, 1 each at Matadara, Front St, Rose St and Hwy 680 NB on Ramp
  • San Ramon Valley Blvd: 3 collisions, with 1 each at Town & Country, Livery Mercantile and Greenbrook Dr.
  • Iron Horse Trail Crossings: 2 collisions, with 1 each at Linda Mesa and Greenbrook Dr.

Implications and Safety Recommendations:

The data reveals that high-volume areas such as crosswalks, intersections, and trail crossings are particularly vulnerable for pedestrian accidents. These locations, especially Railroad Avenue, Hartz Avenue, and Diablo Road, require further investigation and enhanced safety measures to protect pedestrians.

Understanding where and why these accidents occur is key to developing targeted interventions. Improvements such as better signage, pedestrian infrastructure upgrades, and increased enforcement of traffic safety measures can help mitigate the risks.

By focusing on these critical areas, Danville can take meaningful steps toward improving pedestrian safety and preventing future tragedies.
